General Background to The Pye Family
Sir Robert Pye (1585–1662) was an English courtier, administrator and politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1621 and 1629. He supported the Royalist cause in the English Civil War.
He was the second son of Sir Walter Pye of the Mynde in Herefordshire; he was a retainer of the Duke of Buckingham, by whose influence he was made, in 1618, Treasurer of the Exchequer; he was afterwards Auditor of the Receipts of the Exchequer in the reigns of James I and Charles I, and, 13 July, 1621, received the honour of Knighthood. He was replaced in his former post by Charles II, who made him a baronet. He died in 1662, and was buried in a chapel in St. John's parish, Tothill Fields, which he had built and endowed. Sir Robert Pye was Remembrancer of the Exchequer in July 1618. He was knighted 13 July 1621, and bought the manor of Faringdon in Berkshire from the Unton family. He was Member of Parliament for Woodstock in the Long Parliament. He contributed £1,000 towards the recovery of Ireland, and supported Parliament after the breach with the King. According to Ben Jonson, in his early life, Sir Robert “loved the muses”. He married Mary, daughter and coheir of John Croker of Batsford in Gloucestershire. Sir Robert Pye (1620 – 1701) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1640 and 1660. He fought on the Parliamentary side in the English Civil War.
