Plastic free poppies - 25/5/23
We’re committed to reducing single-use plastic in all our activities in a drive to be economical, sustainable, and less impactful to the environment. So, we’re delighted to share that our poppy will now be made entirely from paper and will be even easier to recycle.
This significant development has been achieved over a number of years in collaboration with external experts and partners and with the hard work of our in-house teams.
Collaborating with experts, we’ve assessed the environmental impact of the plastic-free poppy to ensure its sustainability.
We’ve achieved:
*A 40% reduction in carbon emissions in production
And the paper will be made from: 50% recycled waste from the production of coffee cups and 50% responsibly sourced wood fibre.
The plastic-free poppy keeps the iconic poppy and leaf shape design (or four petals for Poppyscotland) and can still be fastened with a pin or inserted into a buttonhole. Stick on versions will also be available.

Councils offer financial support for community organisations as food prices continue to rise and increasing numbers of people turn to food banks for essentials.
The voluntary food network – voluntary and community organisations such as food banks, food larders and community fridges for residents – plays a vital role supporting people but demand for their help has surged as fuel and food costs escalate, particularly for everyday staples.*
To help support the voluntary food network South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse district councils are inviting community food groups to apply for a grant of £2,500 for essential supplies.
The grants can be used to help pay for a variety of expenses including food, additional storage and energy bills.

Tesco recycling - 29/4/23
Take it to the Faringdon Store (Container in store entrance)The collection points will allow customers to return all their previously unrecycled soft plastic, such as the clear film used to wrap meat and fish, crisp packets, fruit and veg bags and sweet wrappers, rather than having to throw it away. Most councils don’t collect soft plastic from homes for recycling so it typically goes to waste.
In a recent sample, Tesco was able to recover over 80% of the soft plastic returned by customers. It is now working with recyclers to explore what can be done with the remaining 20%, which is currently sent for energy recovery.

Potholes - 14/4/23
According to the latest flyer from the LibDems, one of their priorities is the state of the roads in Faringdon
Well, all I can say, is they have not travelled on many roads in the town recently. Gravel Walk has a very large hole, on the bend, which has been there for a very long time. It was there, to a lesser degree, when they closed Gravel walk to fix the other holes, why wasn’t it fixed at the same time, or is that too logical.
It is also quite clear that they haven’t been down Canada Lane. This is the only road on and off the estate, and if is not only a disgrace, it is dangerous, especially to cyclists or for motor cycles.
If this is what they stand for, or consider this to be acceptable, then it is a sad endictment of their priorities.

Dragon on Gravel Walk? - 19/3/23
Does anyone remember the house on Gravel Walk that had a dragons head sticking out of the window?
My Grandmother lived on Meadow Bank and it was easily spotted on our walks into town during our summer holiday visits.
I can find no photographs but fairly certain it existed (around the 80’s-90’s)

Tunnels Leaflet - 19/3/23
Now available in the Pump House Information Centre . Cost £1.
Tunnels - 14/3/23
Tunnels.
When I left school in 1967 I went to work for Russell Spinage who had a contract to renovate areas of the Crown. I remember being part of the workforce knocking down the old lathe and plaster ceiling in the ballroom from above, standing on the rafters and using shovels to bash through with all the rubble falling on the floor below, no health and safety back then just some pieces of old dust sheets ripped up and tied around our mouths as the dust resembled a thick fog.
While we were working at the Crown I well remember going down into the cellar and being shown what was part of an old tunnel which had become exposed due to the bricks becoming perished and being replaced with new ones. It didn't go far as it had caved in, but it was a tunnel. I was told that it led to the church and came up under the pulpit, how much of this was fact or just winding a young lad up I don't know but I believed it. Several years before this I did hear that when the pontoon bridge was put up and they came to replace the old sewerage pipes that part of a tunnel was discovered but was quickly filled in.

Footpath Cleared by Vale Path Volunteers - 22/1/23
Vale Path Volunteers’ (VPV) have pruned along Faringdon FP17, the path that goes from end of Southampton St, along Volunteers Way, then over Park Road to Wicklesham. (The VPV is the path maintenance team of the VOWH Ramblers group.)
Brambles had reached the ground from up above on the town end section of the path (to the health centre), and part of the lovely stone wall was obscured again. On the other side of Park Road the brambles had grown in from the side, reaching the path. Saplings were encroaching further up. This time we paid more attention to the 20 metres of so of path to the south of the A420, going to Wicklesham. So, we decided to spruce it up before it got really bad. I have attached some before and after photos.
We are particularly keen to maintain this path as it is used by so many people on a daily basis.
All being well it won’t need doing for another three years.

It went off the road at 11:00 this morning (Tuesday 17th) and will probably be off for the remainder of this week.
Apologies for the inconvenience.

New singing group for Adults. Community Singalong, open to all.
Come along for the fun of singing, whatever your ability
- Mainly 60/70/80’s songs, but a few older anthems. Bring along suggestions. I will canvas the group for songs they like and develop it to their taste as we go, very much tailored to audience.
- words on screen on wall (there won’t routinely be words on paper – only as a back up)
- no music notation. The emphasis is on having fun, enjoying the experience of singing in community rather than singing ability.

The Star - 8/12/22
Hi - I have seen many people comment re the Star that is now not working on top of The Folly. Does anyone know if the Star is totally broken or is it a matter of funding? If it is the later who would be responsible for organising some fundraising? I would be very happy to get involved in some way just not sure where to start If its a non starter then fair enough but wanted to ask.
The multi-coloured lights are lovely but the Star really was special x

A Huge Thankyou - 8/12/22
A huge, heartfelt thank you to the staff at Great Western Hospital, Swindon
Without going into too many personal details, this year one of our family has received cancer treatment, two emergency admissions via ambulances (who came from Didcot) and 6 sessions of chemotherapy.
On every single occasion, our family member has been treated with care, compassion and exceptional professionalism at every single turn by doctors, nurses, paramedics, care assistants, porters and cleaners.
If you’re going through treatment at the moment or are putting off seeking treatment because of what you’ve heard and read in the media, rest assured that the horror stories do not match what we’ve experienced as a family.
If you work at the GWH, in whatever capacity, we want to tell you from the bottom of our heart, that you are valued by us, supported by us and we hope you have a wonderful Christmas and New Year.

Open Country - Tolkien Land - 8/11/22
On BBC iplayer, featuring our very own Sjoerd Vogt
Tolkien once remarked that reviewers, "seem to think that Middle-earth is another planet!" In fact the Shire, Isengard and the horses of Rohan are much closer to home than you think. Tolkien had a car in the 1930's and used to drive out of Oxford and visit sites that definitely filter into the books he wrote.
Now Miles Warde has been out with Tolkien expert John Garth to find traces of Tolkien Land at Faringdon Folly Tower and the Rollright Stones. There's also a brief appearance for Sarehole near Birmingham, where the young Tolkien grew up, plus archive of the great writer talking about where his books may have been based. John Garth is the author of The Worlds of JRR Tolkien - the places that inspired Middle-earth.

So please support us by spreading the word that we want to hear from anyone who can help, and that we are trying to keep the local history alive, both with forthcoming events and by discovering more about the families that have lived in the area since GWR came to Swindon in the 1840s.

We'd love to hear from you - what you love about the Folly, the things you do there, how often you've visited the Tower, how often you ( and your dog?) walk to the woodland.
Also what makes the Folly and woodland so special for you. What makes it important for Faringdon?
Do please email enquiries@ faringdonfolly.org.uk

Resuscitation Toolkit- 19/8/22
Good afternoon All
I am sending on to you the information below, and with reference to the attached content, concerning the message and learning that may help to save many lives from the impact of sudden cardiac arrest across our community.
You may choose how you wish to present the information through whatever digital channels might be available to the broadest possible audience, in order to get this message across, and indeed I have sent this information received by me today from SCAS, to those of you, who may be in the best position from within our own local community, to be able to spread the word and potentially giving us all an opportunity to be a ‘life-saver’!
Please feel free to adapt text that will be appropriate to spread this message (with of course appropriate factual accuracy), and feel free to use my name as a local reference and as a CFR (Community First Responder) in our local community, to be able to make that connection to those who may wish to learn more, or who may have some questions around the process and practicalities of Basic Life Support and the impact of SCA.
Thank you for your consideration and attention to this and please get back to me if you need more information or have any questions on the campaign content.
Kind regards
Malcolm malcolm.gee@sca-charity.org.uk

Faringdon Community Choir - new term starts 7th September- 16/8/22
Everyone welcome- no experience needed.
We sing folk, musicals, old pop eg Mamma Mia, California Dreaming, Pleasant & Delightful, Bohemian Rhapsody, Love is all around, Close to you
plus quick and easy songs/chants that become rounds.
Rachel is great - a very experienced teacher and musician - school, choirs, orchestra. She creates the arrangement and provides sheets for each part- usually 3.
She teaches 'by rote' ie no need to read the dots- but it can still be helpful. When you join you would have access to the member area on the website where there are audio tracks/her singing for each part - helps a great deal.
Practical stuff from Rachel
There are 2 sessions to help you fit the rehearsal into your schedule. We cover the same material in each session so if you can’t make your normal session you can always come to the other!
Afternoon session 2-3.30pm
Evening session 6-7.30pm
Starts 7th September

Works to Rail Bridge Botley road - 6/8/22
The rail bridge in Botley Road will need to be replaced as part of Network Rail’s plans to increase capacity at Oxford Train Station, with this leading to the complete closure of Botley Road.
The station is being expanded as it is ‘close to full capacity’, with services being increased from 2024.
A spokesperson for Network Rail told the Oxford Mail that both Botley Road and the station will be closed next summer.
While timings on how long the closure will last are unconfirmed, it is believed that it could be approximately three months.
The Network Rail spokesperson said: “We are currently in discussions with Oxfordshire County Council about our programme of work for the station, which is in the process of being finalised by our contractor, Kier.
“The key period for us on Botley Road will be next summer when we need to replace the bridge.
“This will mean the road and station will need to be completely closed. This is due to take place at the end of July or start of August.
“Ahead of that we will need to do preparation work, including the diversion of utility services. We are currently discussing all this with Oxfordshire County Council to establish best way of doing this.”
Lines in and out of Oxford Station are already set to be closed over four weekends in September and October, to facilitate the second phase of works to increase capacity.
This is currently set for the weekends of September 10-11, 17-18, and 24-25, plus October 1-2.
Buses will replace regular train services.

Petition for a splashpool in Faringdon - 5/7/22
A resident and child of the town of Faringdon
I (Lizzie Pugh age 10) think it's time that we had our very own Splash Park just like Wantage, Witney and Abingdon do!
Please help me to show support for this idea so that I can take the evidence of support to our local councils and get myself and the other children of the down splashing!

Faringdon Fire Station Have a go Day - 3/7/22
Some of you will remember our Cabinet Member Judith Heathcoat who always supported our fundraising events. Whilst Judith is no longer our Cabinet Member or, indeed a County Councillor, she remains a huge supporter and friend of the Fire family and, having followed the success of our fundraising for the Firefighters Charity and Ukraine, she has decided to get involved.
On Saturday 16th July as part of the Faringdon Fire Station Have A Go Day, Judith will be having her head shaved - yes you have really read this right! I am sure you will agree this is a massive gesture!
This will be happening at 11am. Obviously the aim is to raise as much money as possible to be shared between the two charities. If you are able to donate via the link below, I know that Judith will be incredibly grateful

As most of you know, I am organising The Pump House Project community project for Faringdon's very own FollyFest this year.
The plan is to decorate 10cm x 10cm foam tiles with something that symbolises community to you or something you like about Faringdon, this could be buildings, clubs, pigeons!
You can pick up tiles from:
The tiles are going to be made into a display housed at TPHP for the community to see at FollyFest Weekend and as a permanent feature there after.
Do you have any free time and would like to get involved with a great cause?
We are still looking for volunteers to help out for any amount of time you can spare over the FollyFest weekend Fri 8th, Sat 9th, and Sun 10th July.
It is going to be fun and great for the community!

Shout out from Faringdon Folly - 31/8/22
We'd love to hear from you - what you love about the Folly, the things you do there, how often you've visited the Tower, how often you ( and your dog?) walk to the woodland.
Also what makes the Folly and woodland so special for you. What makes it important for Faringdon?
Do please email enquiries@ faringdonfolly.org.uk
This will help us so much when we apply for funding for the very extensive Tower renovations that are needed.
THANKYOU

- Please do sign up for next term. It really helps me as it produces a spreadsheet for me with all the info of everyone - both current and new! here's the link https://forms.gle/a8cTcdVLAaTwEUZb7
- Do share it with any people you know who you think you might like to join next term.
- Do tell them that if they sign up they can just come for a single £4 session as a trial and then pay the rest if they fancy sticking with it! All the info on the term dates and how much to pay is on there.
There are 2 sessions to help you fit the rehearsal into your schedule. We cover the same material in each session so if you can’t make your normal session you can always come to the other!
Afternoon session 2-3.30pm
Evening session 6-7.30pm
Starts 7th September
If you have questions for Rachel there is a contact form on the website.

Cost of Living Grants Consultation - 6/8/22
https://oxfordshire.org/take-part-in-our-cost-of-living-grants-consultation/
To help answer these questions, we will run an online workshop on Wednesday 7th September at 1pm to consult with the local delivery organisations working directly in our communities. You can sign up to take part here. In addition, we invite local charitable organisations to complete our short survey, which we will keep open for as long as we can to accommodate the summer holidays. You can complete the survey here. We would value your feedback via one or both of these methods – whatever suits you.
We will use the feedback from the workshop and survey to finalise the terms of reference for the cost of living grants round, which open in the autumn or winter (dates TBC).
