VWHDC Local Plan- 3/10/24
New plans that raise standards for housing and other types of development are a step closer following council meetings this week.
Council members at Vale of White Horse District and South Oxfordshire District councils gave the go ahead for the districts’ draft Joint Local Plan to be published for comment for a six-week period and then submitted for independent examination by a Planning Inspector.
The draft plan has been developed between the two councils to help meet local community future need for housing, jobs and infrastructure, and will replace the districts’ current adopted plans.
The councils have identified that there are enough new homes in the pipeline already, with no need to build on any extra new greenfield sites over the next 15 years. Only one area of expansion has been earmarked, which is on the brownfield land owned by the Ministry of Defence at Dalton Barracks near Abingdon.

Vale Community is working with Vale of the White Horse Council
Church path towards Littleworth cleared- 12/8/24
This is to tell you that the Vale Path Volunteers (VPV), path maintenance team of the VOWH Ramblers, returned to Faringdon. The main path that we worked on was Church Path (FP12) towards Littleworth. This had a lot of brambles coming over the path, plus briar and hawthorn.
Our seven-person team also did clearance work on the path from Stanford Road up to and beyond the Folly, then we took the path through the woods heading northwards, where we hauled a fallen tree off the footpath.
We also did some clearing on the field edge footpath that leads down from FP12 into the Vale to the north
We were gratified that so many people passed us on FP12; this is clearly an important off-road link between Faringdon and Littleworth.

Events at Coleshill and Faringdon - 29/6/34
Tour takes place in the town of Faringdon, the meet point will be the Old Town Hall (sometimes known as the Market Hall) in Faringdon.
Faringdon has a rich and fascinating history from mention in the Domesday Book through the Middle Ages, as a Royalist stronghold in the Civil War and, from the 1930s to 1950s, home to the eccentric Lord Berners. All these stories are set upon a unique geology that has been an important crossroads where the east and west from London to Bristol crossed the road from Coventry to Southampton and westwards to Gloucester. There really is something for everyone - fossils, battles, quirky signs and even pink pigeons.
Buscot & Coleshill Estate volunteers are supporting the local town of Faringdon with their town tour. Tours will take place on the first Saturday of the month from April to October.
Meet at 10:30 by the Town Hall, Faringdon, SN7 7HU. The guided tour takes 45 minutes to an hour. The tour is on flat ground with some inclines and curbs.
Parking – there are car parks a short walking distance from the town centre

Thankyou - 26/6/24
Dennis Haynes is happy to report that Iris's funeral at Kingsdown yesterday was carried through exactly as she had requested many years ago. That is "no singing" and, above all "no fuss".
These arrangements were carried out to the letter by our children Venetia and David, the professionalism of the funeral directors Jackson Browning, the Kingsdown staff and the buffet provide by Sudbury House and I extend my thanks to all of you.
I was particularly pleased that three of the many NHS community nurses that treated Iris daily, Sarah, Alice and Stephanie were able to leave their duties and attend. Thank you ladies, your example is a fine tribute to our often unfairly maligned NHS and thank you also for your generous entries in the Memorial Book.
I tried to thank everyone that attended the ceremony and the buffet but if I missed anyone, please accept my apologies.
It really was a memorable day, not of grief and sorrow but a dignified end to Iris's life followed by a modest celebration. I am sure she would have approved.
Thank you all most sincerely.

Thanks from Dennis Haynes - 16/6/24
Dennis Haynes would like to thank all those who sent cards and messages of sympathy after the recent death of Iris. I had hoped to reply to each one individually but there have been so many I have been completely over whelmed. Therefore I would ask all those who receive this message to please pass it on to those who do not have this facility.
For those who wish to attend, Iris's funeral will take place at the Kingsdown Crematorium on Tuesday June 25th at 11.15am followed by tea and biscuits at Sudbury House; Faringdon to which you are all invited.
Thank you again for all your kind good wishes.

Thank you again for all your kind good wishes.

b) FTC strongly supports the recommendation for a second crossing at Sands Hill.
3. Scale/massing and effect on local landscape character.
a) Reducing building height further to 15m would further mitigate the impact on the surrounding landscape

Tell us your priorities for improving Oxfordshire’s bus services- 9/4/24
The Oxfordshire Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) sets out our key ambitions for improving the local bus network and how Oxford county council and bus companies will work in partnership to deliver them.
Oxfordshire were successful in receiving over £14m of BSIP funding from the Department for Transport to deliver improvements between April 2022 and March 2025. This funding is going towards a number of projects from large scale bus priority measures in Oxford, to new bus services and discounted travel, for example £1 bus fares on Sundays in December. Please see our webpage(External link) for further information.
We are updating our BSIP this summer which will include proposals beyond March 2025. There is no guarantee of any further government funding being available, however we are excited about the opportunity this presents and want to ensure that our updated Improvement Plan reflects the views of Oxfordshire residents and those visiting or working in the county.
Let us know your views
To help us develop and update the plan we're keen to hear from people who already use buses and also from those who currently don’t. We also want to hear from public, private and voluntary organisations who have an interest in making our bus services work better.
Your views will help us shape the BSIP particularly for plans beyond March 2025.
The deadline for responses is 11.59 pm on Sunday 14th April.Click Survey to tell us your views

Faringdon Town Tour - 2/4/24
April 6th 10.30 - 11.30
Meet at 10:30 by the Old Town Hall, Faringdon, SN7 7HU. The guided tour takes 45 minutes to an hour. The tour is on flat ground with some inclines and curbs.
Parking – there are car parks a short walking distance from the town centre

National Trust Coleshill. News and events - 29/3/24
Spring is officially the start of the visitor season for National Trust West Oxfordshire. It’s so nice to see the sun and have longer days. The wildlife across the Buscot & Coleshill Estate is also benefitting from some warmth. The blossom is bursting into life and the birds are in full song. We recently welcomed a group of students from Crowdy’s Hill School, Swindon, volunteering as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award. A group of the students cleared the village community orchard, giving it a good tidy and making it a welcome place to enjoy. One student developed a talent for book related crafts to create beautiful displays in the bookshop. Those that have visited the bookshop will know our volunteers do a fantastic job. They have all worked hard and it has been a pleasure to help them achieve their awards.
Everyone is looking forward to the first Coleshill Village Open Day of the year on Sunday 14th April. The farm tour guides have been researching the history of Home Farm at Coleshill to add even more interesting facts into the story, the bunker has been spruced up and the project to get the mill running is under way – come and see the progress. An addition for this year’s Open Days is group walks through the parkland. Led by volunteer walk leaders, these gentle, relaxed walks will give you a chance to experience the nature around Coleshill. After the success of farm tours at last year’s Open Days, there are now bookable farm tours on Thursdays and Saturdays from April 18th in addition the Open Day tours.
Open Days take place on 14 April, 12 May, 9 June, 14 July and 11 August, 2-5pm.
If you like local history, why not sign up for a guided tour of Faringdon town. A group of National Trust volunteers have been working with Faringdon expert, Mike Wise, to lead tours sharing the town’s fascinating history that includes a unique geology, Civil War, and tales of the eccentric, Lord Berners, with funds going back into Faringdon community projects. The tours will be on the first Saturday of the month from April 6th at 10.30 and bookable on the Buscot & Coleshill Estate webpage.
At the Heritage & Rural Skills Centre, courses remain popular with more being added as others fill up. There are spaces on a 2-day woodcarving course with Heritage Crafts Woodworker of the year (and Coleshill resident), Tom Ball. Tom is also running letter cutting courses in wood and stone during the year. These are popular courses with discounts for under 25s.
Further afield at Chastleton, there are Behind the Scenes tours and Inspired by Chastleton. A chance to take your art materials or cameras to enjoy the stunning gardens to create and inspire your own art practice.
All events are bookable on the Buscot and Coleshill Estate webpage with courses bookable on the Heritage and Rural Skills Centre webpage.

The group award nominations should be for groups which enrich and improve the lives of their members or the wider community.

Just to say except a huge THANK YOU to all who contributed to making Saturday's Swan Love 3 such an enjoyable night.
As well as having fun we raised a staggering £1560 on the night for The Folly Tower Restoration Fund.
The people who helped us were everyone who donated prizes, Sue and Frank at The Swan and Oak Taverns, all the friendly people who turned up over the course of our 9 hour shift and of course the DJs - Del Boyo, Kehoe, Charlie, Echoman, DJ Dee, Doctor Block, Phloor Phila, The Big Boss Groove and one other!
What a generous community we live in.

Repair Cafe - 23/1/24
We have a very busy afternoon at Saturdays Repair cafe. A record number of fixers meant we even had to set up more tables. Big Thanks to all those fixers and volunteers who helped out on Saturday to make it a success.
In total we took in 41 items and managed to fix 24 items on the afternoon and a further 6 items were taken home for repair . That’s a 73% success rate ! In total we saved a whopping 62Kgs from landfill. Our first weighty success was getting the massive dehumidifier to work without any repairs .
I think the quirkiest repair was the mechanical turkey, it certainly raised a smile around the tables. I think our best repair for the community was a walking Aid which had a snapped steel bolt.
Looking forward to the rest of this year , we have now set the 2024 programme. Please add them to your calendar and hold the dates if you can .
