| Shellingford is a charming small village (pop c.150)
just outside Faringdon , Oxfordshire, United Kingdom. Situated in the Vale of the White Horse it has magnificent views across the vale to the Uffington White Horse and the Berkshire Downs. The Earliest mention of Shellingford is in a Saxon charter of 931 A.D. ,but undoubtedly it has been in existence for longer than this. The Church dates from the late 12 century and the houses, some built with Cotswold stone quarried within the parish, date from the 15 century to the present day. The village has a Church of England School and a very recent addition of a new Hall opened in 2000. Agriculture was and still is the mainstay of the village although fewer and fewer of the houses are occupied by people involved in agriculture. At the moment there is no other industry in Shellingford. © Robert Sharp 2000 |
