| Longcot Best Kept Small Village In the Oxfordshire Best Kept Village Competition, Longcot was awarded the Marlborough Trophy and judged: a.. Best Kept Small Village b.. Best New Entry c.. Council for the Preservation of Rural England (CPRE) Conservation Award d.. 2nd - British Legion War Memorial Competition At a celebration party the Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire, Mr Hugo Brunner, presented a plaque and cheque to Phil Young, Chairman of the Parish Council, and congratulated the villagers on their achievements. On a very wet afternoon Mr Brunner then visited the churchyard wildlife garden and the village green. 2003 This year the village was eligible to enter the Winners' Class and once again Longcot impressed the judges to come second to the winners Combe. From the judges' report: "The pump and surrounding area are very attractive. The Church and churchyard is once again beautifully maintained, likewise the chapel. The balance between the used cemetery and the conservation area is commendable - we particularly liked the signage and Class I had obviously been very busy. Well done! The establishment and maintenance of the conservation area has obviously drawn on villagers' skills and you are all to be congratulated on its high standard". |
