Joint Economic Forum for Faringdon

Notes from a meeting of JEFF held on 12/07/2001

The Countryside agency has agreed to fund a Healthcheck for Faringdon. This is an investigation into the economic, environmental, social and commercial, and transport issues within Faringdon. It will result in the production of a 5-10 year strategy for regeneration. The first stage is to employ a project manager – probably someone local who knows the town. Later stages will involve local people and organisations, investigate the current situation and develop the vision and strategy for Faringdon. This work needs to be completed by March 2002.
The Healthcheck for Faringdon is the first of its kind in the Vale District. Hopefully this will bring together initiatives and plans from the County , Vale District and the Town Council as well as other organisations within the town.

Judging for Faringdon in Bloom will take place 11/8/01. This year there is a class for allotments. Enquiries: Dee England

Economic initiatives from VWHDC. Their annual strategy has been published – there should be a copy in the Town Council Office

A full-time member of staff to develop Tourism initiatives is to be appointed. This could include a Tourism Forum, comprising Hotels, B&B, activities, to develop ideas.
Free training for B&Bs to get assessed for a star rating, will be announced A possible technology hub on Harwell Campus may generate a need for more accommodation in the West of the Vale.

Farmers Market, 1st Tuesday of the month. Since it started in April, there have been between 9 and 13 stalls- plants, cakes, pottery, wine, fish, sauces, honey- all primary producers from within a 25 mile radius. The town is much more vibrant on this day. The existing market traders commented positively on its impact for them. A much more varied view is held by shop traders.
