Nursery Rhyme Decorations - 30/04/09

I'm interested to find out more about the celebrated nursery rhyme decorations (Dr Foster and Four and Twenty Blackbirds) on two of the town's houses (eg. who put them up and when, what they're made of, and so on). Does anyone have further information they can give me?

No toffees on the NHS - 28/04/09

Re Health Service - how right you are, name supplied. Certainly no toffees with the modern NHS

In a nearby practice, (not Faringdon) not so very long ago, community nurses actually refused to visit a terminally ill patient - a friend of mine with no family, who lived alone - over a weekend, because when they visited him on his return from hospital (on a Thursday) - I quote - "he was burning a joss stick and it was just too much". Over the next week the patient in question was refused any pain relief at all - due to a "failure in communication" A message was sent after a couple of days from one of the GPs at his surgery that he could have "two paracetamol".

On the morning of the day he died he begged for a bath. Visiting nurses refused, even though I had already prepared the bath, laughing as they said "we don't have time for that kind of thing". Later the same day I requested a home visit by his GP - I wont describe the unpleasant circs but sufficient to say that he was in the very terminal stages of liver cancer. I was told by the surgery receptionist that "We don't allow home visits unless they are specifically requested by the patient" After my insistence and visit to the surgery a doctor visited, but refused to give the patient any pain relief on the grounds that "I'm sending him into hospital, so I can't give him any pain relief" The ambulance arrived some three hours after the doctor's visit, and the patient died later that evening.
The ambulance crew were cheerful and considerate, as were the hospital staff. I followed the patient to hospital, to be asked on my arrival by the staff there what was wrong with the patient as the GP's note "was very sketchy".

I was appalled by the the sheer lack of kindness or consideration for this dying man; and by the arrogance and disregard with which I as his carer, albeit in an unofficial capacity, was treated by his GP surgery. Whatever frustrations or dissatisfaction the surgery personnel may have had with their roles vis a vis the health authority, government, bureaucracy etc was NO excuse.

I cared for and attended the patient daily throughout this period. I carefully and accurately documented the episode, and yes, I did make a formal complaint; first to the GP surgery, to receive a dismissive and inadequate response; then to the Swindon Primary Care Trust. I asked for nothing more than an explanation and apology. After about nine months of obfuscation, and delaying tactics on their part, I gave up. No doubt I am one of their complainants whose case was 'satisfactorily settled'.

I hasten to repeat that this in no way reflects upon or applies to our Faringdon health centre, whose staff, despite the perceived inadequacies of the system (over which they have little control), as far as I am concerned have always been considerate and helpful.

Health Centre Reference - 28/04/09

the recent posting about the Health Centre from the person who gets a toffee with her flu jab.
Unfortunately this person suffers from an illusion because the local GPs and nurses wont be there for him/her in an emergency after 6pm or at weekends.

Unfortunately, the 'old fashioned' days are long gone when our GPs would run a local casualty service and see patients at weekends. Patients now have to rely on the out of hours service when they'll probably be asked to go to Witney or Abingdon. Have you ever tried to get your local GP or nurse to visit you in Faringdon at weekends?

Have you also tried the new 'non old-fashioned' robotic answering system to make an appointment during opening hours? Is there an option to over-ride this in an emergency? Luckily, there is still an option to talk to a human.

Peace Group Event 2- 26/04/09
l agree with Councillor Alan Hickmore that the Peace Event was superb - the speakers, the audience participation and the extremely efficient organisation. It was a privilege to hear Tony Benn whose wisdom and experience must be unsurpassed. Many congratulations and thanks to all those who organised the day.
In the evening the auction at the Crown for the benefit of MacMillan nurses was an enjoyable event and raised generous funds.

It just shows what Faringdon can do !

Peace Group Event - 26/04/09

Just a quick note to thank the Peace Group for a stimulating and valuable meeting in the Corn Exchange today. The subject was civil rights and how they are being eroded in our modern society. The key note speaker was Tony Benn who was, as always, inspirational. But all the speakers, both from the platform and the floor, were excellent as was the message they were giving. The Peace Group organised the meeting brilliantly and I for one came away inspired.

Thank you very much. (PS A thank you as well to Al Cane who organised the PA system. This is not easy in the Corn Exchange with its difficult acoustics - but every body could hear and take part)

Alan Hickmore
Health Centre - 24/04/09

Thank goodness for Faringdon's old fashioned Health Centre !
I am a regular visitor to our Health Centre. Every year I go and a friendly nurse who has obviously been looking forward to my visit gives me a Flu jab and a toffee. The staff are always friendly, sympathetic, helpful and reassuring. But more importantly I know that should an emergency arise they will be there for me !
That's what I mean by "old fashioned"
Unfortunately for my daughter she lives in West Swindon where the attitude reflects the "Modern" approach to medecine which is that it would be a good job if it wasn't for the patients.
Yesterday she needed some urgent treatment (I won't give you the gory details.) She telephoned to make an appointment but was told she would have to call again this morning. She got an appointment and the doctor told her that she needed the immediate attention of a nurse. Unfortunatel the nurse was too busy so my daughter, who is seriously disabled had to take a taxi to a pharmacy to get the dressings she needed. Now that's what is known as Modern Nursing
Am I bitter ?
Of course I am because I know, from past experience, that any complaint will only result in worse treatment.

Pregnant or New Mother? (or new dad) - 23/04/09

A group of local women, variously from NCT groups, post natal groups etc. started collecting tips or comments or answers to questions most relevant to them when they were either pregnant or a new parent. This resulting text is growing all the time and we have vague plans to develop it as a small book for local families of children under age 1, who might benefit with the aim of raising funds for local groups such as The Family Centre or maybe even set up a small trust for local babies in need.

If you'd like to get involved, can you please drop an email to garthpool@btinternet.com and we'll add you to our mailing list. Please let us know your current situation, i.e. pregnant, new mother etc. and we'll send you a regular question which we'd appreciate an honest answer to.

Sample questions have been "What item of maternity clothing can you not live without?"; "What shocked/surprised you most about giving birth", "Best piece of advice you were given about labour". We see this as a real opportunity to provide real answers to real questions at a very confusing, exhilarating and unique(to you anyway)time. if you'd like to help, please contact us as below.

Many thanks Mel
Your views wanted - Urgent 999 ambulance calls - 22/4/09

The primary care trust (PCT)and our ambulance service (SCAS) are looking at ways to improve the service of attending urgent ambulance calls to getting patients seen in A&E. There are a number of factors - the initial call handling/triage, the location of the nearest ambulance, speed of admission to A&E and making the ambulance ready for another call- all affect how well the ambulance service performs.

The national target to achieve 75% calls in 8 minutes is not achieved in Faringdon. The figures show that on average they are achieved about 47% of the time- however this achievemnt is largely through our wonderful VOLUNTEER local responders. They achieve the 8 minute target for almost every call they are asked to make - but they are not allowed to cover all types of emergency.
They're called out for urgent situations when someone is not breathing, heart attack and the like

Please do write to this site with any views or experiences you have had about any aspect of the health service- where it hasn't been as good as you would wish, and where it has. Full confidentiality is assured.
The aim is to give the PCT information on real experiences to help them improve the services to Faringdon

In all Health matters - GP and Dental services as well as transport to hospitals, local intermediate care beds (as at Witney hospital) your views are needed.
Have a look at the online survey on the makesachange website

The FAP Health group and myself through the Links Stewardship Group are trying very hard to raise Faringdon's profile in all areas of the Health service. But your views are needed.
We need to make a bit of noise in order to be heard!

Thanks

I Thought I Heard A Rustling - A comedy by Alan Plater

Director: Gary Field
Thurs 21, Fri 22, Sat 23 May 2009 Faringdon Junior School, Gloucester Street, Faringdon

I Thought I Heard A Rustling - An ex-miner turned poet is appointed writer-in-residence at Eastwood branch library. However, the senior librarian soon realises the feckless but charming Geordie is no poet. Despite this she finds him highly entertaining, much to the disgust of an earnest young man who covets the writer-in-residence role.
These three find themselves in an unlikely alliance when the Libraries sub-committee proposes demolishing the library.

Buses and Skate Park - 11/4/09.

I really understand your frustrations. Things were the same 10 years ago when my son wanted a) a Saturday job in Swindon & b) to go skateboarding. He was in fact on one of the first consultative committees for the Skate Park.

1. The building of the Bloor Homes estate means that Stagecoach will upgrade the route between Swindon & Oxford to a premium route which will result in a much greater frequency of buses.
2. Bloor Homes are also required to put down the base for the Skate Park as part of their S106 agreement, so this should happen this year.

Oh and one more thing:
I just read some of the comments posted in February and, to all those who left complaints about Budgens staff, we are not all rude and unhelpful! Perhaps you could take up your complaints about individual employees with the managers, rather than whining about them anonymously on 'talking points' where no one can do anything to help you.
Don't taint us all with the same brush, and don't you DARE assume it is always the younger staff.

There is a reason why young people in Faringdon are dissatisfied and unhappy. It's that people like you lump them all into the same pile and assume they're all destructive, anti-social misfits.

Buses and Skate Park - 10/4/09

I have two points to make:
1. The bus service between Swindon and Oxford is appalling. It doesn't go often enough, is always late, and only has two night time services, at 7pm and 10.40pm. Now, I don't know about anyone else, but I rarely have reason to go into Oxford at either of these times. No bars or clubs open before 8.30pm, and by the time 11.30 rolls around, it's too late to get into these places cheaply. If the bus company run just a few more services at 8pm and 9pm, and perhaps on till midnight or 1am on Friday and Saturday nights, they would find they had far more customers. Faringdon is already a difficult place for teenagers and young adults to live, because there is rarely anything going on that we can become involved in, and having a rubbish bus service to the places that actually do cater for this age group just makes it all the more bleak. One thing that people aged between say, 18 and 25 like to do, is go out to bars and clubs at night. Surely it would be in Stagecoach's best interests to run services at the times when a large majority of people want them? I realise this is a matter to take up with the bus company, but if there are other people out there who feel the same way, it would be helpful if they too would write a letter to Stagecoach, asking them to help us. It's not just young people either; my dad said if there was a service up to midnight or 1am, he would gladly use to to get back from dinner parties/shows/gigs/the pub!

2. I read a post written by Chris Langlay-Smith, in which he asked about the long-awaited, mythical skatepark. I think the fact that the hard-earned cash raised by the youth of Faringdon in order for a skatepark to be built, was taken and put into the CHRISTMAS LIGHTS rather than the intended purpose, is absolutely disgusting. There are a lot of skaters in Faringdon. They need somewhere to go. Hell, ALL the young people need somewhere to go. My friend, Sophie Cave and I had been trying to campaign for better youth facilities for a while and were elected members of the Faringdon venues committee before we had to leave for university. Chris, if I may speak directly, you would be an ideal candidate to take over this responsibility in our place. I'm not sure if the committee has elected new members yet or not, but I can certainly put you in contact with the secretary if you want! It sounds like you really are passionate about persuing facilities for people of your age group.
Thanks!

Skate Park - 2/4/09

I am being constantly re-assured by residents of faringdon, members of the council and even the police that everything in their power is being done to gain a skate park to the town of faringdon. However, after fundraising for the past 13 years, the committee for a skatepark has seen no rewards for its incredibly hard efforts.
im sure everyone involved is with me when i say i want an explanation for why our efforts have seemed to go unnoticed.

for those in the dark, faringdon council; promised us a skatepark over 10 years ago,
spent saved money on christmas lights that we didnt even need,
denied every locations we put forward,
ignored our attempts to get grants from the mayor.

A few weeks ago, i got a warning from the police for skating in faringdon. they told me my actions were unacceptable. however, i find the complaint made to be unacceptable. think of a youth facility in faringdon besides a normal park. cant be done. Finally a concluding question, why has it been so long?

Skaters - 1/4/09

To Scott and anyone else wondering what the heck is going on about the posting on the skating
Little did my husband or I imagine when we posted about our daughter's acheivements at the weekend that members of her former skating club would use this forum to attack an eight-year-old girl. Some people really need to sort their priorities out.
If you read my husband's first post carefully, we never claimed she was a champion, only that she won three gold medals which is true. We also never said she *had* been selected to skate internationally, only that she could be. Usually the three top placed skaters go to the Cup of Europe which is in October (so we did make a mistake there but really what a fuss to make over getting it wrong by one month).

So apologies to those of you who are bored with this topic. I don't intend to post on this matter again and hope that others will also let it drop.
