| Local transport
consultation - 28/11/09 HT and Gene Webb are spot on.It is ridiculous that there are no buses between Faringdon and Witney. At Witney and Wantage there are x-ray units and other hospital services- we can only get there by car. We pay our Council Tax to the Vale at Abingdon - but we no longer have Vale officials to deal with questions in Faringdon. re Shopping - we have a very limited range of shops here - and sadly getting fewer - while Witney now has many new ones e.g. M and S and Debenhams - which do not greatly compete with our local shops - and a cinema. Our transport situation makes us the poor relation of other local towns. The new homes being built should give us more frequent buses between Oxford and Swindon. But we shall still be cut off from other nearer towns. The missing buses affect employment opportunities, medical care , shopping etc. Faringdon deserves better. Margaret Barker |

| Transport Survey -
28/11/09 Having looked at the transport consultation document (You have to register first) I was interested to see that so far there are only two suggestions in the 'Long List' of schemes, that are for Faringdon. These are soley to do with cycle lanes. In this context, this document - The VWH Local Transport Plan 2006-2011 makes interesting reading. Here are some quotes (my formatting) : The Vale Community Strategy was developed by the Vale Strategic Partnership. The main issues relevant to this Plan are: *Transport - the most frequently identified priorities for action in the consultation exercise were: bus services and linkages with community transport services; traffic congestion; improved and expanded cycle tracks; improved road maintenance; greater consultation to ensure a more systematic and co-ordinated transport system and parking provision. Access to services some of the priorities identified under this strand were also relevant to transport including more local access points. Delivering Accessibility Accessibility mapping has shown that much of Oxfordshire shares broadly similar accessibility characteristics, particularly with regard to rural bus accessibility. The notable exceptions in the Vale of White Horse are: Faringdon suffers from particularly poor access to healthcare; and Many of those living in the south west of the district look towards Swindon for their needs. Healthcare All of the district is within 25 minutes and about half within 10 minutes of a hospital by car. By bus, only about 25% have access of under 60 minutes. In general access to hospitals is poorer than to other facilities reflecting the concentration of provision in the Oxford and in Banbury. Faringdon in particular suffers from poor access. " The population of the town has grown since this report was formulated. It is set to grow more. There are many more elderly here who will increasingly need access to healthcare and services. That many older people no longer wish or will be able to drive does not yet seem to have been addressed within this latest list. Improved cycle routes cannot be bad, but given also that most of the working population commute to and from their workplaces by car, I would guess that cycling is mainly a leisure activity, so should it take priority over over such items as better frequency and links for public transport.? I have competed the survey - but now that after a public consultation exercise the Market Place 'improvements' have actually reduced convenient short term free parking and increased the traffic congestion, confusion and inconvenience in the town centre, in spite of the 'strategy' (see quote under Transport*) above, I have doubts as to the value of these public consultations. | Local Transport
Consultation - 28/11/09 Please give your views on the Local Transport Consultation See The Local Transport Plan 2011- 2030 Consultation pages http://myconsultations.oxfordshire.gov.uk/inovem/consult.ti/LTPconsultation3/consultationHome on Oxfordshire County Council Site. It's our opportunity to suggest transport improvements in Faringdon ( we're in the small town list) Currently the only suggestions for Faringdon are for more cycle lanes - good but what about: Buses, parking, speeding, road conditions? Please add your views, unless things are added to the strategy, it will be really difficult to get improvements. For what it's worth my suggestions are:
Faringdon's secondary care health services are provided from Oxford, Witney and Swindon, currently it is either difficult or impossible to get to these places without a car/taxi. Better public srevices are needed to encourage people to use their cars less(pollution/climate change). VWHDCs strategy has been to reduce the amount of parking for residents to encourage them to use public services. But the public services are inadequate Free parking will attract shoppers into the town (improved viability) and discourage illegal on street parking. This also has an impact on the safety of in town cycling I forgot about opening the station at Challow (it has to be asked for however unlikely) and to point out that the population of Faringdon is growing (£10k by 2020?) | Shop Closures -
26/11/09 I noticed this morning that both the shoe shop and the "cheap" shop opposite have notices in the window to say that they are closing down. I think they are run by the same person. It's always a shame when local shops close, especially the cheap shop which has been very useful. However does anyone know what's brought this on ? The cheap shop was recently "refitted" so it doesn't look as if this was planned. Hopefully someone else will take the shops on. name supplied |

| ANNIVERSARY TRIP TO
FRANCE! - 19/11/09 Next year sees the 20th Anniversary of Twinning between Faringdon, and its surrounding villages, and Le Mele sur Sarthe in Normandy. A special visit to our twin town in northern France is planned for early June 2010 for celebration of the anniversary. In addition to 'door to door' transport by luxury coach for the majority, a group of local people are planning to make the trip to Le Mele by bicycle! . The cycle group will leave Faringdon on Tuesday 1st June, splitting the 80-mile journey to Portsmouth by over-nighting halfway. After an overnight ferry crossing to Caen, the cyclists will make their way through the beautiful 'fairly flat' countryside of Normandy, arriving after 60-odd miles in our twin town, hopefully at the same time as the coach, late afternoon Thursday 3rd June. There will be a support vehicle in attendance if needed. A second group plan to cycle to Portsmouth in one day, joining the first group on the Wednesday overnight crossing. The return home is on Sunday 6th June by coach with bicycles carried in the support vehicle (although some very keen souls may opt to cycle back!). . The long weekend of celebrations will include the legendary hospitality that is always freely given by our French hosts, together with a sight-seeing trip and entertainment. . If you wish to register interest in the anniversary cycle trip to Normandy, please contact David Williamson on 01367 240033 or by e-mail: dllm.williamson@btinternet.com. For general enquiries about the twinning trip contact Jeanie Pugh on 01367 240374. |

| Faringdon is Filthy...Oh Yes it is ! -
17/11/09 A stroll round our town will reveal dog mess and rubbish almost everywhere. Some of it has been there for weeks. There are two simple solutions. One involves Council Intervention and the second, Civic Pride. NEITHER involves rocket science The Council solution is straight forward... Employ 50 cleaners with modern equipment. Problem solved. Of course our Council Tax would increase but "No Pain No Gain . The Civic Pride solution would cost nothing..It just requires those householders who do not feel that dog mess, etc enhances the kerbside appeal of their homes to remove it. They don't have to enjoy removing it and some people obviously accept that squalid surroundings like old cars, toys, bottles, etc are normal. I am very grateful that my neighbours don't share their view. HGM |

| Home is where the heart is -
16/11/09 I am a 32 year young woman, working as a painter over here,.. living in the most beautiful place on Earth, South Africa. Waking up every morning to the sounds of the whales outside my kitchen window, and ahh, the beauty of the fein boss frangrant hanging in the air, and as December approaches it's summer here,... the beauty of cloudless mornings and pure blue sky, the walks in forests, and faery folk everywhere,.. the white sandy beaches and incredibly sun sets,.., and as evening approaches I pick up shells on the beach, the happy japping of my jack russels as they jump in and out of the waves,...which reminds me,... there is nothing like home, I miss faringdon, the cozy winter evenings of chimney smoke everywhere,... the dark Christmas walks up the folly, and friendly community feel,... there is nothing quite like home,.... If only to remind one self that home truly is where the heart is,.. Nicole |

15/10/09 Car parks eh. Normal people who have values do not risk using Marineville's car parks because of the hostile Aquaphibians who have been attempting to fill the car parks with spit. | Unsung heros of the Vale -
14/11/09 On 6 March 2010 I will be hosting the Chairman's Annual Community Awards Lunch at the Guildhall, Abingdon. The theme for this year's awards is 'Unsung Heroes of the Vale' and I would be very grateful if you could complete the attached form if you know of anyone that you feel should be recognised for their achievements in the local community. Nominations can be for anyone who lives within the Vale and you feel is worthy of recognition for their contribution to the Vale's community; either on a personal level or as part of a group. Please feel free to nominate as many people as you wish. It would be great to have as wide a variety of award winners as possible. See http://www.activitiesoxfordshire.info/wps/wcm/connect/PositiveActivities/Home/ I couldn't see age ranges - but activities like sport, drama, dancing, sports, brownies, duke of edinburgh are mentioned, so I guess it's fairly wide Gene Webb This document has some helpful information about adding an event |

| Use of the car parks - 14/11/09 There is another time cost in using the Faringdon car parks. Since the council decided to introduce the new machines, it now takes ages to buy a ticket at peak times because everyone seems to find it hard to work out which buttons to press to enter their car registration number. I have to say that I think this was over-kill to stop people passing on a ticket worth 40p. I would love to know how long it will take for that extra income to cover the cost of the new machines. | Re: Fireworks and Folly Event -
14/11/09 Halloween on the Folly was once again a great success. We would like to thank all the visitors for climbing the tower on Halloween night this year We had over 360 visitors this year, which is 58% more than last year. We are well aware of the queuing problem and we do apologise for the long wait. The problem is the last 2 set of steps to get to the top of the tower, which are too narrow to allow people to pass each other (going up and down). You can say that we have become a victim of our own success (58% increase over last year). The Folly committee has already identified the queuing as a problem, and if we know we need to find a solution for this. Once again thank you for visiting the tower on Halloween night and apologies for the long wait. Folly Committee. |

| Town
Parks. - 13/11/09 Alongside Folly Park there are two other fine parks in Faringdon which myopic readers of this forum you may not yet know of. They are named after the roads to the two fine cities of Southampton and Gloucester and there is a clue in the name as to their usage. Gloucester Street Car Park and Southampton Street Car Park. Can you guess what they are? If you are looking to park a car and access the town centre these parks are a good place to start. Both are seconds away from the town centre, tickets can be redeemed when making purchases over 5 English pounds at about 25 local shops and magically they are free (nada, nothing, gratis) in the evening and over night, as well as all day Sundays. A short stay of under an hour costs 40p if you are not purchasing from a local shop offering the buy back scheme, this seems to me to be a relatively low price for those who can afford a car. The other cost however, is that of time. Tragically they are located almost 250 meters away from the Market place and this could take up to 1 minute to stroll to from the town centre. This level of shear inconvenience makes them unpractical for most users, hence why they appear to be empty most of the time. Good luck. Sir Caustic |

| Death by
Non-Availability. - 12/11/09 I have to say that Faringdon is the worse place I have ever come across for parking. I commute twice a week to visit my girl friend, and always have problems parking in Faringdon. The increase in double yellow lines, if you see anyone actually handing out parking tickets is obviously lost and now the bollards by opposite the church. I came foul of that this morning, arriving last night and parking correctly. When I came to leave at 0610hrs the car next to me had not left enough space (because of the angle they had parked) for me to pull out, and I could not pull forward because of the bollard. Although tempted to just reverse into the car next to me, smash a window for the alarm to go off, thankfully I managed to borrow my girl friends car. Before anyone says "SO WHAT, YOU GOT IT SORTED" - it depends on what you do for a living, why I was leaving that early and also what if I couldn't legally drive the other car. Some consideration would have been nice or more parking. I also understand that a taxi rank is also planned, who ever is the town/village planner, they must live outside Faringdon and needs to be shot!!!!! Name Supplied |

| How did the Union Flag get there in the first place
- 11/11/09 It has been funded and erected by Faringdon Association of Residents with particular thanks to David Hughes and those who pay a small subscription as members. Perhaps it is time that some more people joined one of the few groups in Faringdon that actually cares about and supports the concerns and interests of Faringdon residents. A new flag is available, would Rob care to climb atop the Pump House to attend to it, rather than leave it to a group of pensioners? Sheila |

| Darling!. - 11/11/09 How sad to get hung up on being called darling by a very pleasant young lady at the service station. I have always found most of the staff very amenable and friendly at the Petrol Station. On the odd occasion when I have encountered service with a sneer then I have gone out of my way to cheer the poor beggar up. As for closing the forecourt, this is a dictat of Elf & Safety. When there are cones at the entrance, I have the intelligence not to attempt to drive in in the first place! Some people just seek to be offended. Sally Lund |

| Remembrance Day - 8/11/09 I have never seen All Saint's so packed on Remembrance Day before. I have seen it so crowded that a few people had to stand, but there were a lot of people who couldn't get a seat this time. It was very, very moving. When the 2 minutes silence started there was only the sound of The Crown's air con and the odd cry from couple of toddlers in the crowd. Apart from that the silence was almost absolute. | DARLING -
6/11/09 As far as our Service station goes I have found that one of the members of female staff has the need to address all of the customers by the name of Darling, personally find it quite offensive, what's wrong with just a thank you, or maybe even Sir. I found "would you like a carwash today" a bit less annoying!!!. I am also amazed that we appear to have the only service station in the country that has to shut its customers out of its premises for a period of time every night. It's a good job the BP Service station is just 5 minutes up the road and it doesn't feel the need to treat its customers in this way. Name Supplied |

| Fireworks to music - 6/11/09 Did I miss read the sign ? I have to say I was really looking forward to seeing the fire works this year, the thought of fireworks shooting up into the night sky with perfectly timed music sounded really good, it reminded me of a time when I saw fireworks in the grounds of Highclere Castle To music it was really nice and memorable. Needless to say I was a bit disappointed to see Faringdon's nice fireworks shooting into the night sky with the theme tune to the A-Team, playing quietly in the back ground. Sorry but it just didn't do it for me!. Name Supplied |

| Al's poster of Faringdon street signs is
great. - 5/11/09 Our twinning guests from Le Mele sur Sarthe were delighted to be presented with a souvenir copy at the twinning function in the Corn Exchange last Saturday. Next year will be the 20th anniversary of the Faringdon-Le Mele twinning. I wonder how many of those street names wouldn't have been there 20 years ago? Helen Barter |

| A few comments -
3/11/09 I would like to make. I would prefer too many police than too few. Like everything in life it is not easy getting everything '' just so ''. The police are there for our protection and I that makes me feel safe and priveliged . Regarding Halloween ;We had children knocking on our door .They were very sweet well behaved children , with good mothers accompaying them quietly in the background. Halloween occurs but once a year , and i was thrilled to see the effort that has gone into the costumes. Diane Huddle |

| Surprising music -
1/11/09 The Faringdon fireworks display was brilliant as always this year, however we did find the choice of musical accompliment quite surprising / interesting from Gerry Anderson's greatest hits to the theme from A- Team. I guess though it makes a change for the typical classical music link. Name Supplied |
