Potholes R Us! - 30/6/10

A map of Potholes. Is this for tourists? Is the dip in Lechlade Road in fact a pothole? I am sure I have seen some big enough for someone to live in! There is a trench warfare diarama on the A420 on the way to Oxford and I think the BEF are being pushed back at the moment though there has been intelligence that the Hun might be beaten back by the new 'Tanks' in a Cambrai like strike by the broken catseye.

It is exactly this time wasting sort of nonesense that squanders incredable amounts of money we cannot afford to spend unproductively. Better putting a couple of guys in a truck and have them map the ones they have filled using a sat nav spotter. Cross referance if the road there was dug up recently and if so by whom and send them a bill for not refinishing the road to a servicable standard. I seem to recall in the old days these repairs had liquid bitumen poured round the jount to seal them from water ingress. I would like to be corrected but is this not the cause of half the pot holes? Water has got in, frozen and lifted the repair which the traffic then breaks up and distributes around including taking out the odd windscreen. If the water cannot get in then the repair will last longer. How much of the public's money has been expended in repairs to tracking, tyre failures, suspension damage, injured motor and pedal cyclists and ultimately deaths which can be ill afforded and only ever estimated? I am willing to bet just the deaths would fill a bus which would be a huge media story if it fell off a cliff because of a poor bit of road. Maps, is it? Spot Bots it is!

TV Reception - 29/06/10

In response to the Faringtdon resident who posted a comment on 20/6 concerning poor TV digital reception in Faringdon, I would just like to comment that after several months with no ITV1, 2, Channel 4 or Channel 5 reception at all, suddenly a couple of months ago it all returned, for no apparent reason that I could see, and I now have near perfect reception on all channels with my Freeview box, even though I live down "in the dip" near Lechlade Road. Of course, I am aware that we are still using the reserve Oxford transmitter, but so far so good!
So don't give up yet!!

Disgusting public toilets - 28/6/10

I too have had the misfortune to have to use the public toilets in Faringdon and will not be using them again, I realise it is not easy to keep them clean but I think the problem lies with the overall condition of them with mouldy walls and peeling paint. Our council tax rate is one of the highest ( as usual ) in the county yet we are very often forgotten about.
Is it any wonder most people prefer to shop out of town, when the facilities are so disgusting.
Mrs Clarke
Disgusting public toilets - 28/6/10

I too have had occasion to visit the public toilets, and found them to be disgusting. I quote from the Draft Strategy recently published

"Public Toilets
The council provides public toilets at the Southampton Street car park in Faringdon and the Portway car park in Wantage. These permanent toilet blocks are all cleaned regularly and have disabled access. They are closed overnight to reduce the risk of vandalism."

Cleaned regularly eh? Perhaps it means once a week/month? See what I mean about the Draft Strategy being a public relations exercise?

Warning - 28/6/10

Warning to those purchasing items from Presentation Gifts. I tried to buy something today, but was nearly stabbed in the finger with an inch long sharp pin (which was in the item I was looking at) whilst rummaging in a basket. Thankfully it was me and not my 4yr old son, who was trying to buy a present for his sister. I gave it to the proprietor and I did not get so much as an apology or a thanks. When I mentioned that the item was obviously shop-soiled, slightly grubby and creased and had a ruddy great pin put through it, and therefore as it was obviously ex-display (and was there an ex-display discount), I was asked who I was buying it for?! When I replied that it was for my daughter, I was told no, and that it would be repackaged and sold as new.

Frankly, having almost impaled myself and having had no apology whatsoever, I am utterly disgusted by the attitude of the staff member in question, appalled at the lack of care, poor regard towards customers' safety, and sheer greed.

So to other people frequenting the shop... Caveat emptor. Buyer beware. Check your goods thoroughly, look out for dangerous objects, and if you can - buy elsewhere.

Potholes R Us! - 28/6/10

The Council's plans to produce a map of the most dangerous potholes in the local area does have a certain merit for visitors but local drivers now automatically steer round them.
My favourites are the ones round the Great Coxwell roundabout.
But wouldn't the money be better spent either by renewing the white markings round them or even by filling them in.

Thankyou Crunchys - 28/6/10

I would like to say a big thankyou to Crunchys animal rescue. I rang them on sunday to say i had a baby bird at home which i had picked up from my path.I did wait around to see if the mother bird would come for it but she never appeared and as I have four cats I was worried they would get it. I took the fledgling round to my daughters and rang the RSPB but it was only a recorded message. Then I remembered crunchys and rang them. "Fred" was there within half an hour and took the bird to the centre. Bearing in mind thet England were due to kick off very soon I was really pleased and impressed that he drove from over oxford way to collect the fledgling.
Well done Crunchys. I know if I ever win the lottery they will be on my list of charities to help out.

Draft Strategy - 27/6/10

I shouldn't be too disappointed about the draft strategy. If you can find previous 'strategies' 'local plans' or whatever they call such documents, you will see that much of what is proposed, (and not just for Faringdon), never gets implemented anyway. Councils feel they need public relations exercises just like everyone else.

Draft Strategy - 27/6/10

A lot of wordage to say that there is really only one major idea, which is only a might be, to be offered to Faringdon in the next 20 years. It ends by confirming that Faringdon is still considered to be a lemon to be squeezed in favour of the East of the Vale. Great, so that puts us in our place and any enhancements are going to have to come from within Faringdon itself.
Given the track record of confused thinking that does not bode well for anyone with a bright idea. What we really need is a French style Mayor who can throw a bit of weight about and obtain direct funding as this document suggests we will be starved of money as previously. Reading this I would not be rushing to open a business in Faringdon, but more, probobly not in the Vale either. Writing promises and wish lists does not help business, where are the comittments to real projects? Economic activity zones with help on rates etc.
What is the cost of running a sheet of tarmac as a car park? Virtually nil. There are various other nonesensical statements on car parks so clearly a raw nerve there. Needs pressing as I am convinced we can have free parking.
Its all a bit etherial spot bot stuff really isn't it. As my dad would say 'Collect your money on the way out'.

The economic world demands much more active engagement that a paper of sweet nothings to get our economy moving. Sadly I think the office whallers still have not got it.

Supermarket debate- 27/6/10

I was interested to see the comment vis a vis the Guardian report (see earlier posts). When exactly did the proposed Tesco store become a 'regeneration strategy' for Faringdon? In what ways do the area and conditions studied by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation correspond to Faringdon? Precious few I would guess, but rhetoric - and the odd third hand sentence - wins of course, rather than really well researched comparative evidence.

It is usually the middle class voice which proposes the winsome idea of the small thriving market town with little sustainable non-chain shops, and tries to impose it's plausibly articulate views on everyone else. Many people in Faringdon have no option but to shop locally, and pay a high price for doing so. I am quite sure that there are many of us who would love to turn the clock back to some idealistic (and probably non-existent) era but the Jeannette Wintersons have no need to actually make a living from their fruit and veg enterprises. The majority of small retailers do. That is why most will not survive in Faringdon while any supermarket exists here, and if they did, would be prohibitively expensive.

The establishment of the by-pass and the expansion of Budgens, when it was Carter's, together with improved retailing facilities in nearby towns, and inevitable changes in demographics and transport were the factors which sounded the death-knell for most of Faringdon independent small retailers. Tesco, with its convenient free car park, and reasonably priced goods, will provide competition for Budgens - unwelcome for the proprietor, but probably very welcome for much of the the captive population - already Budgens has had to improve. It is worth remembering that a successful planning application does not necessarily mean that the plans will be implemented. With the threat of competition (in the shape of Tesco) beaten off, what incentive has Budgens to make any further effort? It already has a near monopoly in Faringdon so why bother to expand when that monopoly is strengthened?

Draft Strategy - 25/6/10

Is that it? Is that what we've been waiting all this time for? I sincerely hope this forms a tiny part of what is planned for Faringdon over the next two years, or we might just as well give up.

Where are the strategic aims to support Faringdon's economy? Where are the pledges to address transport issues, reduce commuter journeys, help Faringdon survive as Swindon swells, encourage a low carbon future?

VoWHDC clearly still isn't listening and clearly still doesn't understand Faringdon's strategic importance as the only major town in the west of the Vale.

It's just sad that Council officers take so long to knock up a report that a trainee could have rattled out in an afternoon. They'd better have a wider, more thorough report in the offing, or they would have completely betrayed the time and effort that many good people in Faringdon have put into this consultative process.

MoD study on cadet forces your views needed - 22/6/10

This study will influence the size, shape and funding for years to come of all the cadets forces. At a time of significant government cuts in the public sector spending, your views have never been more important!
Please respond to the survey next week when it opens On Monday the 21st

The study is being undertaken by Southampton University and should assist in the development of a wider business case to demonstrate the worth of the Cadet Forces that could have a significant bearing on future funding. In order to be considered valid, the study requires responses from as many Cadet Force Adult Volunteers and Cadets as possible as well as those associated with them in the widest sense.
The questionnaires are to be completed online between Monday 21 June and Monday 5 July.

The window for collecting data is small - just two weeks - and every effort should be made to encourage Cadet Force Adult Volunteers and Cadets to visit the website and complete the questionnaire as soon as possible before the website closes on Monday 5 July.
This message should be cascaded down across the whole Cadet Force population as comprehensively as possible in order to ensure that the study has sufficient returns to complete a credible report.
The questionnaire website goes live on Monday 21 June and is at: http://www.geodata.soton.ac.uk/cadet_survey/
Comment on Strategy and Action Plan for Faringdon and Wantage - 22/6/10

Dear all
I am inviting you to take part in the Vale of White Horse District Council's external consultation on the draft report on Strategy and Action Plan for Faringdon and Wantage. This report covers the period 2010/11 to 2012/13.

The draft strategy (click to open and read) proposes a number of strategic aims and outlines the roles and responsibilities of the council in respect of the delivery of the strategy. The council’s economic development service would work with the JEFs to co-ordinate partnership activity, liaise with public sector colleagues and businesses, consult with residents, secure external funding, monitor progress and make recommendations to improve project delivery.

The draft action plan details specific projects for Faringdon and Wantage and identifies projects that have a district-wide focus but also impact upon the market towns.

Your views are sought as one of the external consultees (see full list below) and I would be grateful if you could seek the views of your fellow group members. Please circulate as widely as you feel necessary.

The external consultation period will be six weeks, ending on 30th July 2010. I would appreciate your views by Friday 30th July.

Details of the consultation will be published on the council’s website and will be the subject of a press release, providing the opportunity for any other interested parties to comment on the draft strategy.

Your views are sought because it is felt that you have detailed knowledge about the economic development issues that are important to Faringdon and / or Wantage.

You can give feedback on the draft strategy and action plan either by completing the questionnaire in the attached document or by going on-line and filling in the on-line questionnaire. Please click on the following link:- http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/6VPVRFZ
This has been designed so that it will only take a few minutes of your time.

I would like to thank you in advance for your co-operation. The council will reflect on all the responses given and will ratify the report in the few weeks following the end of the consultation.
A final report will be produced by early September.
kind regards, Trudy Godfrey

To all who helped with Ecoweek - 22/6/10

As last time- there have been LOTS of people helping - with organising, refreshments, baking, opening their houses/farms, phoning & chasing - and so on.

A big thank you to all who helped in what was another very successful ECOWEEK.

As happened last time, there were some events that didn't quite work as planned (the vineyard visit was scheduled at the same time as the England Algeria match!) and other events that were packed out.

The shorter ECOBIKES got slightly ECOLOST - but didn't mind...

At Friars Court, our speaker (Keith Taylor - new MEP) was stuck in Strasbourg - so instead we had a question time panel of three celebrity experts speaking to a standing-room-only audience.

And at the Wind Farm Open Day - thanks to the Westmill Sustainable Energy Trust - lots of people enjoyed a wonderfully busy final day with glorious sunny/windy weather . The turbines & the new sound sculpture clearly loved it as well!

Since June 1st there have also been more than 7000 visitors to the www.ecoweek.info website. Interestingly, there are still more than 100 new visitors every day visiting the site - many of them from other countries.
Many thanks once again to all who helped in any way.

SOLL Leisure Cancellation Terms - Response - 21/6/10

I would like to respond to HT in regards to the current membership terms & conditions confusion.

I apologise if the wrong information was communicated at the time of sign up. Every member of the team is trained and we don't hide the fact it is a cancellation period of Three months. If a member is injured or needing to suspend or cancel due to health reasons the cancellation period is reduced along with supporting documentation.

The telephone call in which was received to HT will be investigated as we do not need to act "angrily." The majority of comments we receive are commending our helpful/friendly staff and we pride ourselves on good customer service.

I hope HT will consider renewing the membership and continue to enjoy a healthy lifestyle at Faringdon Leisure Centre.

Just to comment on the other comment regarding SOLL Leisure. SOLL leisure is a charitable trust operating the site on behalf of the District Council and we have reduced the tax payers' deficit by 66% year on year. Any surplus generated by SOLL Leisure sites are re-invested into the facilities. Recently the Centre at Faringdon has seen a new floor in the studio, re-sanded & re-sealed Sports Hall, refurbished lockers, decoration and new flooring in the pool corridor and the implementation of free swimming for under 8's as of 1st June 2010. We continue to work in partnership with the District Council on all initiatives.
Just on the point of the leisure facilities in Abingdon, these are also operated by a trust and not the District Council.

Faringdon leisure Centre - 21/6/10

Soll leisure are one reasons why faringdon Skaters have been sucessful they are supportive in ensuring that our skaters are Fit and have clean facility also when we have injuries.
Our leisure centre has had good management over this passed 2 years and are always willing to help in any way. This passed year there have been increase classes for all and not just the super fit catering for all ages.
They have increased the numbers using the Fitness room and is supervised at all times. They are always willing to listen and deal with complaints and comments from the public.

Soll Leisure Cancellation Terms - 21/6/10

The recent complaint about Soll Leisure doesn't surprise me. I too have had an issue with them and found that they act exactly like a private leisure company would. They seem to have forgotten that they are a non-profit organisation running facilities for the local council which have already been paid for by the their customers, the ratepayers of Faringdon.
The Vale of White Horse also don't seem to want to get involved now they have handed the leisure centre over to Soll.
Is it a conincidence that the leisure facilities in Abingdon (so often favoured by the Vale) are run directly by the council while we in faringdon have to put up with Soll who are unelected and seemingly answerable to no one?

Parking in Stanford Road - 20/6/10

How many more cars to be parked on the Stanford Road in Faringdon?? It's got far beyond the joke now!!
A few years back there were only five cars being parked on the road now there is 18 all the way from ferndale road turn to Berners way junction, and there is only 6 houses on that stretch of the Stanford road and three have there cars parked in there drive ways!!
we know the other houses have to park out on the road due to no drive ways and only have 4 cars,But for people who live halfway down London street and Ferndale street are parking there cars there, you now have to wait right up the top of Berners way Junction for a car to come up the hill or wait down the bottom of the Stanford road!!
it's just beyond the joke now,
Didn't the people know before they brought there houses down London street or Fendale street no there had no drive way for there cars for what they use to commute to work out of faringdon or to do they shopping out of Faringdon!!

TV Reception - 20/06/10

Just been reading about the TV Reception. I know that there are problems with the transmitter but that is only after several months of enquiries and getting aerial people to check mine, and paying for it. We had better reception back when digital first raised its head, although I know a lot of people in Faringdon didn't. But there was a day when I used 4+1 very happily to watch something that was on at the same time as something else. No more dare I use the recorder for commercial channels, because the chances are it will show up as 'no signal'. So I use the recorder for BBC programmes and watch the commercial ones even though that way I have to sit through the ever longer ad breaks instead of fast forwarding. It is also not very reassuring when phoning a Swindon company for advice to be told that we have already 'gone digital' in Faringdon. They may have in Swindon but we certainly haven't here! I also have heard that it 'will improve' on the switch over but by then analogue will have gone and I won't be able to get the digital commercial channels.

Second to None - 19/6/10

I too have used Second to None.
Recently my son had new wheels put on his car by a friend of his. A few weeks later when I went up with the vehicle to investigate a knocking noise (not from the wheels) I was told that the wheels had been put on incorrectly - something to do with the rotation of the wheel - and Second to None took them all off and put them on the correct way round and didn't charge me. I insisted that they took £20 - even if it was only put in the Christmas fund or bought a sandwich for everyones lunch!
In relation to the knocking noise - there was nothing untoward found. Some garages could quite easily have fobbed me off with some mechanical error and consequently charged me.
Hats off to this company I say. I will be using them again.

Soll Leisure Cancellation Terms - 18/6/10

As a regular user of the local swimming pool, I was approached by a staff member and agreed to take out day membership, payable by monthly direct debit, last year. I was assured, in response to my specific question re cancellation, that membership/payment could be cancelled at any time, so I signed the proffered form.
Shortly before Christmas I injured my shoulder and developed a chronic problem, so ceased swimming. Three weeks ago I called in at the leisure centre to inform them that I would be cancelling my membership - and explained why. I was then - and only then - informed that Soll Leisure require three months cancellation notice.

It was then agreed that I could cancel with only one month's notice in the circumstances. On the following day however I received a very abrupt phone call from a woman at the leisure centre who angrily enquired to know to whom I had spoken the day before; who then informed me that I was not 'allowed' to cancel my membership, unless I present a doctor's note to the leisure centre '...within the next few days'. I Wrote immediately to the centre to complain about this telephone call but so far there has been no response.

As I wrote to them at the time "If Soll Leisure think that this is the way to retain their customers they should think again" I had intended to renew membership in due course, but after this I have changed my mind.

Potential members be aware; what ever impression you may be given when encouraged to sign up to the leisure centre, three months notice is required to cancel.

Faringdon Follies Award - 17/6/10

"name supplied" asked about the actual award recd by "Faringdon Follies".

"FARINGDON FOLLIES: The Making of Grand Eccentric has won The Dr. Henry and Lilian Nesburn Playwright Award in the prestigious BEVERLY HILLS Guild-Julie Harris Playwright Competition out of some 500 entries. "

This has been clipped out of http://www.thewriteguy.ca/faringdon.html .

According to Candace Coster, the Competition Coordinator, normally they do not give notes but since they were aware of the staged reading on July 11 in Faringdon UK they made an exception because of “the quality of the piece” which they found to be “highly imaginative” with “witty dialogue and colorful characters.”

Yep - they're talking about our very own Lord Berners and his mates! Now - doesn't that make you plump up your crop? (I'm assuming that's the kind of thing that one pigeon would say to another).

Pink Pigeon poop in Budgens? - 17/6/10

Yes - Yes & Yes.

Confirming: A single ticket to "FARINGDON FOLLIES: THE MAKING OF A GRAND ECCENTRIC" will cost £5 .

But if you buy a brace (columbidaeic rather than orthodontic) then the TOTAL cost is just £3 for the pair.
The reason is that you'll then be sitting on someone else's lap .

Actually - that last bit was made up .

You're right - it IS amazing that the Play about Berners even exists; that it's already won a Hollywood award even before it's been published; that it was written by a playright who's won NUMEROUS other awards (just look at http://www.thewriteguy.ca/dg%20resume.pdf ) and that this first reading (always a major milestone in the life of any play) is actually happening in Faringdon during the Arts Festival!

And why hold it Budgens? Simply because Berners would have approved. (We also considered holding it underwater but Budgens wasn't too keen).

Those who won't be able to make this event I think will be very sorry to have missed it!
Sj
P.S. Since the Reading is happening during normal shopping hours ( - another first!) , you WILL also be able to see the event for free - but your chair will then only have two legs, and these will be attached to your hips.

Church Farm House - 7/6/10

If this is the one and same school that moved to Southmoor into New House just off the Hanney Road I have some Photographs of the pupils and staff while it was still in Faringdon. I attended New House School when it was run by Mr and Mrs Street in the '60's. The smell of hops take me straight back to the school as it was part of and next to Blanchard's Farm which still has Hop Gardens. I also helped clearing the buildings when Mr Street, a spinabifida suffer in a wheel chair but quite remarkable man, was hounded out of business and into hospital by the local media.
Ron Street was not wheel chair bound though, despite little use of his legs. He was often to be found behind the bars of a huge Villiers powered Ransome mower or an Allen Sythe as they gave him freedom.
On one well remembered occasion he had the throttle stick open and rolled of the machine into the ha ha before the ensemble buried itself into the green house. Panic ensued as a body could not be found until he was heard and retreaved, bruised, dirty but triumphant. The man was a lesson to the youngsters that a disability is challange to work harder not a reason to abdicate responsiblity for oneself.
I still know some of the staff and pupils of that time as many special and extraordinary people were associated to New House.

Recycling changes in VWHDC - 15/6/10

Asked the question of the company taking over the recycling (Verdant) about the bank of recycling bins at Gloucester Street Car Park and was told that they will be replaced with large mixed recycling banks that can take the same items as the new green wheeled bins.
From October this includes glass, tins, paper, mixed plastics and Tetra Paks.

TV reception - 15/6/10

I was given a digital top box. It has proved totally useless as the signal is poor. Unlike the old system if part of the information is missing you get nothing. A poor picture is not an option. Secondly, for free it seems the offering is many more channels offering repeats and poorly produced programming unless you are prepared to pay.
We are promissed that when the switch in signal is made the broadcast power will be increased. We will see but I cannot help thinking that the switch over might not be the time to loose the TV in favour of the radio, for informative news and Planet Rock and Internet, for research and archive material. The TV as it is is fast becoming the weak link in broadcasting and perhaps it is a system and box I do not need to invest in as I have plenty of other things to employ my brain with.

Re Supermarkets - 15/6/10

Shop chains, indeed any business chain, removes money from the local economy to its head office and supply hub. That is why it is vital to have a good environment for small business to be started and prosper throughout the country. This was fostered during Thatcherism, peaked under Major and systimatically plundered and legislated into closure by New Labour. Without small business we might regain some corporate and national stability which will look great on paper but without the benifit of helping communities who are serviced by remotely located companies having lost their local business and economy. That is why tax rises will not work and cuts in expenditure will bring Great Britain back to us as we new it.
Trouble is there is already dithering and it is easier to tax than to cut.

This is a problem very much larger than Tesco but I take the point the effect will be very much larger on Faringdon than any other immediate decission pending. However this political economic situation enherited and made worse by delaying the election will ultimately have a greater effect on lifestyle longterm and I fear we will be sold the less painful option which will not work.
Are we in fact to become Lesser England instead without even the benifit of being able to govern ourselves without third party interferance?

Laundrette - 15/6/10

Great news to see that someone is thinking of opening a Laundrette in Faringdon. I actually run a local ironing business and the amount of times i get enquiries for laundering is unimaginable. I would be very interested in perhaps negotiating a ironing contract with you if the time should occur.

Kara's Ironing services is a local ironing business who takes that load off your hands when you need it. We understand that people have very busy lives therefore we collect and deliver to your door (free of charge in local area) with a 24 hour turnaround if nessesary. We offer good rates and all work is done to the highest standards in a smoke free environment. Possible changes to recycling in VWHDC - 14/6/10

Whilst chatting to the staff from VWHDC on Saturday at the ECOfair I was told that the recycling bins in the car park may be withdrawn. It will be kerbside collections only.
The bins seem quite popular to me - judging by the amount they were overflowing yesterday when I was there.

Re Supermarkets - 14/6/10

I have just read the Guardian article and thought the most important sentence was "But evidence from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation of a Tesco-led regeneration scheme in Leeds concluded that it was disastrous for the local economy and destroyed the existing retail base." Also, a section from an article by Jeanette Winterson - most of which may not be relevent - struck home as well: "The politics of food – the everyday politics of what we put on our plates – affect the whole world at one end of the scale, and the boarded-up high street with no butcher or baker at the other end of the scale. We can let big business bamboozle us into believing that small is self-indulgent and ineffective, or we can look closer, and take back some power.

Everyday from now on, in the new austerity Britain, a country where the Post Office can't be subsidised but banks can, and where we all have to pay more, except the big businesses which are going to be allowed tax breaks to "re-vitalise" the economy – there is even talk of giving Tesco tax breaks to open stores – every day we will be told how things have to be – but why?"

Rubbish collection changes - 13/6/10

I expect most people have heard that we'll all be getting a range of wheely bins for use from October. I hadn't realised that the rubbish collection day was to change too.

The good news is that the whole of Faringdon will be collected on a Monday. The less good news is that when it is a bank holiday week it will be a Tuesday, which means that unless everyone remembers that the day has changed, our streets will be littered with bins on a Bank holiday Monday- not a good impression for visitors to the town.

Some councils don't collect on a Monday, some councils collect on a Monday whether it is a Bank Holiday or not. Verdant - the new supplier for the Vale said that 'their employees like to have a Bank holiday off work'

The pubs in Faringdon are the on the up... - 13/6/10

Not normally vocal, i must say that The Old Crown Coaching Inn has exceeded my expectations.
Not wanting to advertise, but a bottle of wine for 6.95 with an exceptional lunch is a refreshing change to the usual corkage endured by the other establishments.

I want to premote Faringdon as a Lunch/Dinner environment for all to enjoy. The other Landlords should take note.
Quietly impressed.
Poor TV reception - 12/6/10

We live on the Coleshill Drive Estate at the top of Coxwell Road and have intermittant breaking up of the TV pictures for ITV,Channel 4 and 5. At times it is awful and cannot watch those channels and other times it's fine.
This has only happened in the past 10 days or so. We have contacted the digital helpline who told us that there is a problem with the transmitter and it will take until September to fix.

Is this information correct as this does not bode well for the switchover as then there will be no anologue channels to revert to? Does anyone else have this problem? We have asked a neighbour but on that day it was fine!

Arts Festivals - 12/6/10

I hear that there are quite a few arts and/or music festivals on from now until September that Disgruntled Donnian might prefer. I hope to spend a few hours at one of them for the princely sum of £50. Even though there are only three bands there that I really like, I shall enjoy the whole experience.

There are other free festivals too, but only one is on my doorstep and offers more variety than most, including some young performers and bands I've never seen before as well as some old favourites from previous years.
I'm really looking forward to it.
Happy Faringdonian

Supermarkets don't regenerate communities – they hoover money out - 12/6/10

For those that do not have the time to read the full article in the Guardian, the most importatant bit is this "Areas that look poor from the outside are almost always full of talent, enterprise and masses of human assets. What is needed is an economy that supports their own efforts to build distinctive, thriving neighbourhoods – not a red carpet for remotely owned corporations who want to extract value and will leave clone towns in their wake".
Every penny of profit spent in a major supermarket disappears out of the local area, up to London & sometimes overseas.
Their tax specialists ensure that they avoid as much tax as they can leaving us to foot the bill of runnng the country.
Lets keep our money in our community.

Re World Cup - 11/6/10

Hi, I do hope this posting finds its way onto the site in time, The Red Lion IS showing all the football for the world cup! We will have 4 televisions (50",42",37",32") two of these will be in the pub and two will be in the garden (under cover) we will also have an outside bottle bar and a BBQ for all of the England games.

I did put it on the front page of The Folly newspaper as I advertise here evry month and it was posted on the Faringdon.org What's on section. I hope you will join us in supporting England (and any other country that you may wish to follow).
I look forward to seeing you soon.

Faringdon Arts Festival all Folked up . . . again - 11/6/10

To the Frank Zappa quoter: I'm so sorry I was unaware that us Donnian's need educating! I thought the purpose of the Faringdon Arts Fest was to entertain and bring the community together. I stand corrected!!

I am quite partial to a bit of Frank myself, and as previously mentioned love a lil bit of folk. BUT, and I am basing this on my own observations, the Festival tends to be considered a great success when the mood is up, and jovial and complemented by the music which we are all listening too . . . for instance imagine going to a party and being subjected to the hosts choice in music, fine if it's a bit of upbeat mainstream, but really bad if you're subjected to their Joni Mitchell collection or worse the Jethro Tull discography. I hasten to add that these are both EXCELLENT artists, but do you really want to listen to them in this scenario? . . .

finally, as for my involvement. Last time I checked I was allowed to vote (but it doesn't make me a politician), I am also allowed to be outraged by the NHS (but don't think I'm a Doctor). However I will be contacting the committee for next year. I have a small baby and husband who works away, so this year is out of the question I'm afraid. But I look forward to submitting my ideas for next year.

Room/Hall for Hire? - 11/6/10

Stanford in the Vale (only 4 miles away) has two halls that you can hire by the hour. One is very large but the smaller one would probably be okay for you.
They both have access to the kitchen as far as I know, there is a grass area outside and they are next door to the park.

Faringdon Arts Festival all Folked up . . . again - 11/6/10

Dear Donnian
I have just seen a copy of the FAF programme and, as far as the musical content is concerned, I think it's the most eclectic line-up so far – everything from A to Z, literally (African drumming to Zydeco). I think you may be confusing "elitist" with perceived minority appeal; part of the point of a festival like this is surely to expose the audience to styles of music and performance that they wouldn't normally have the chance to experience, in the hope that their lives are a little richer for the encounter.

What's wrong with that?

I'll skip the obvious arguments already eloquently expressed by others (ie if you're so disgruntled and disenchanted, get off your aspidistra and get involved etc), but it's a little disappointing that someone who professes to be a musician is able to make value judgements about the content of the Festival before a single note has rung out across the Market Place.

I sincerely hope that your views will not preclude you from supporting any of the events – who knows, you just might see or hear something that makes you smile, makes your heart beat a little faster or brightens up your soul?

As the late, great Frank Zappa (a genius who was NOT, thankfully, part of the mainstraem) once said: "A mind is like a parachute – it doesn't work if it's not open."

Room/Hall for Hire? - 11/6/10

I have recently moved to Faringdon and am looking for a hall or room to hire for my childs' birthday party. Somewhere with a kitchen and that can hold around 50 people. Can anyone recommend anywhere?
Somewhere close to a play area would be ideal, as the age range is diverse and I need to try to please everybody at once!
Also, does anyone know of any local children's activities/entertainers for hire?
Thanks in advance.

Faringdon Dramatic Society presents for your entertainment... Cold Comfort Farm - 9/6/10

A play by Paul Doust adapted from the novel by Stella Gibbons
Thursday 24th, Friday 25th and Saturday 26th June 2010
Faringdon Junior School
Director: Jo Webster

The orphan Flora Poste, heroine of this adaptation of a tongue-in-cheek classic rural novel, likes everything to be tidy, pleasant and comfortable. When she goes to live with her eccentric relatives at Cold Comfort Farm in Howling, Sussex, she does her best to alter her surroundings and encourage those around her to greater things. This proves difficult, as the insane Grandmother Ada Doom, who "saw something narsty ... in the woodshed", insists on keeping all her family around her. Elfine, who was wont to wander the hills in a poetic trance, is transformed at Flora's hand into the charming wife of an aristocrat, while the lusty, lady-killing Seth fulfils his dream to become a star of the silver screen.

Farcycles in France - 8/6/10

Last thursday, 3rd June, the saturday cycling group known as FARCYCLES (but pronounced FARCICALS) completed the 160 mile ride to our twin town of Le Mele-sur-Sarthe. Starting last tuesday from the Market Square (in the rain!)the group travelled via Hungerford to our overnight stop in Andover. After a nasty wet day we found that the hotel's hairdryers were particularly good at drying out cycling shoes and mitts!. Our 2nd day (sunny and warm) took us from Andover to Winchester for a lunch time stop before completing the day's ride to Portsmouth where we caught the overnight ferry to Caen.

At Ouistreham we were met by several people from Le Mele, some cycled with us whilst we also had a motorcycle 'outrider' who imagined he was on the Tour de France! A long morning ride of 55 miles took us to Almeneches where some of our hosts from Le Mele had prepared a very welcome lunch. We also enjoyed a good 2 hour break. The lunch time proceedings were completed by donning our red, white, and blue T-shirts and 'singing' the Marseillaise as we returned to the dining hall. In the afternoon we visited Sees cathedral before assembling some 3 kms out of Le Mele into 3 columns of red, white, and blue before we were escorted into Le Mel where we received an enthusiastic reception from the residents of Le Mel and the Faringdon Twinning Association visitors. Some members of the cycling group have arranged their own sponsorship, but in addition we have set up a group website at www.justgiving.com/farcyclestofrance.
We have chosen HELEN AND DOUGLAS HOUSE as the charity to support.

Bunker explosion - 8/6/10

Two 15-year-old boys have suffered 2nd degree burns in an explosion inside a World War II bunker in Oxfordshire. It is thought the teenagers were smoking inside the pillbox off London Street, near Faringdon, on Sunday.
One of the boys threw a cigarette into a bucket sparking a "flash fire". Police said they were in a stable condition at Bristol's burns unit. Officers are hoping to speak to them later.

An investigation into the incident has been started involving the fire service and military munitions experts. Inspector John Turner of Thames Valley Police said: "There aren't unexploded incendiary devices in the area, it is safe, it has been confirmed that there was some powder, it could be that it was fireworks, we don't know yet."

School at Church Farm House 1940-1946 - 7/6/10

I went there,in fact I think all four of us went to either Church Farm or Romney House, the school eventually moved to Southmoor, to the house where the ex MP Robert Jackson lives.
Not sure you are right about boarders. I seem to remember Miss Downs died leaving Miss Sims to run it.
I used to have a photo with sister Ruth in it.

School at Church Farm House 1940-1946 - 7/6/10

Does anyone have information about the school that used to be at Church Farm House ( Church St, near Coach Lane I think)
It was run , at this time by a Miss Sims and Miss Downs. Romney House in Gloucester St. was also part of the school.

Friends reunited says ' School operated at least from 1945 to 1948 when I attended. It was quite a famous choir school with many students going to choirs in major cathedral schools eg St Pauls, Winchester, Ely etc. It was a fantastic school run by a Miss Downs and Miss Sims primarily for boarders, quite a few from overseas families but town location catered for day students. Am unsure when it closed but know that it is now a private home'
Any info is welcome

Faringdon Arts Festival all Folked up . . . again - 7/6/10

In response to members and ex members of the Faringdon Arts Festival committe and those who feel slighted by my previous comments.

As a musician I appreciate more than many will know the genre of folk and blues, and indeed enjoy listening to all kinds of quite "elitist" music. But for the main Market place stage it's simply alienating to an audience which consists of many children up to adults. There should be a more "mainstream" selection to appeal to masses and the more selective music, (blues, folk etc) staged at other venues within the festival.

As far as my own input is concerned, I have been rather busy the last two years, but as previously mentioned I feel the committee may be in need of even more fresh blood so to speak.

I appreciate how hard the committee have worked in previous years, but as self appointed members they should also be able to take criticism of all kinds.

Oh, and for Neil, The Portwell Cellar has a collection of local well maintained cask ales served from the barrel. These are also available from the Portwell Angel.

The Folly tower is open on the first Sunday of the Month but will also be open on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th July.

The Swan at Radcot - 7/6/10

My friend and I went to the Swan for lunch last Thursday, (would not entertain the idea of going out to a riverside pub on a sunny bank holiday) and had a cracking lunch, served 10 minutes after we ordered.
Bill,Norma and their staff are brilliant and do a good job in sometimes very busy times. Relaxing in the sun by the river makes you realise just how lucky we are in this area!!

Faringdon Arts Festival (with a tint of lord Berners) - 7/6/10

When I was approached and asked if I would like to become involved with organising this years event as part of the community group M.A.D.D., I was pleased to be able to offer time and whatever experience I have. The aim of the Festival this year is to try and broaden not only the performances but the involvement of the younger generation e.g.Battle of the bands, organised and run by the students of F.C.C.
The Sound on the main stage is from John West and the crew from F.C.C. Stage management is by Callum Walton, also from F.C.C.
The Faringdon Fringe will happen in the Town Park on Saturday 10th July, and many other events are planned (SEE YOUR PROGRAMME).

I have no time for people who moan about the efforts of other members of the community who try their best towards creating an event such as the Faringdon Arts Festival.I know that there is bound to be something else that has not been included, that is the way of it, and hopefully it will be an exciting addition to next years festival.

So please don't hide behind NAME SUPPLIED, come out of the woodwork and join in. Make yourself known so that you can make a positive contribution. Directionless criticism takes nobody anywhere but constructive criticism often does.

all Folked up - 6/6/10

As he is a Donnian our Arts Fest critic will no doubt be preparing a varied repertoire of sonnets, love poetry, religious poems, Latin translations, epigrams, elegies, songs, satires and sermons by that late great Dean of St. Pauls, John Donne.
Not quite sure how elitist he thinks that would be compared to what is currently on offer, but personally I'm not convinced that the programme would be all that much of a crowd pleaser these days, still, give it a go, why not. Top marks for effort, eh? I'll come and listen (Weather permitting).
Or does he mean Donny & Marie...?

all Folked up . . . again - 6/6/10

It's good to hear such positive feedback from "very disgruntled" Donnian (Name Supplied) regarding the Arts Festival programme. I assume that he/she was disappointed when their offered involvement in organizing, helping or performing was rejected - or is it more likely that they simply couldn't be bothered and sat back waiting for someone else to do all the organizational work, the planning, the council negotiations, the artist invitations, volunteering marshalling, programme delivery, site clearance or simply learning and rehearsing their performance. As ever, if you want things to be different, you have to DO SOMETHING. And, as ever, you are probably wondering why the people who DO do something, eventually stop.

I am sure we would all be fascinated to know what "positive and crowd happy input for next year" you have planned. Perhaps you can put yourself forward to start helping now for FAF 2011 - these things take a lot of time you know.

From a different perspective, well done and thank you to all those involved this year who have put in so much effort to date and will continue to do so throughout the event. I feel sure it will be a another great success. Certainly my friends and family from The Midlands, Yorkshire, and Lincolnshire are planning to come again and we hope to support as much of the varied programme as we can!

Arts Festival - 5/6/10

I started the Faringdon Arts Festival seven years ago and although I’m not involved this year I’m not going to sit on the side lines and watch the new organisational team be rubbished.

I say team, in reality it has been down to a handful of good hearted community minded people who give up a great deal of their time to stage the event. I suspect that, as previously, the programme of events is largely directed by the amount of money available and the reliance on artists to perform free of charge. This year I understand public funding was cut dramatically. Notwithstanding that, the organisers appear to be presenting a variety of genres of music (as well as other events).

So,“Very disgruntled” Donnian you have had seven years to come forward and offer your input. Where were you? Nowhere. You don’t even suggest in your posting what sort of music you would like. Perhaps you’d also like to offer your assistance by marshalling or join the handful of volunteers who’ll still be picking up litter at 1am when everyone else has gone home.

Now’s your opportunity. Stop moaning and get involved.

Disgruntled Donnian. - 5/6/10

I am so sorry you feel uncatered for.
May I suggest you make a point of offering your services to the Arts Festival organisers in February next year.
If you have the odd few months to help plan the festival, to include art, crafts, poetry, photography, drama, dance and literature as well as a range of music, and to raise funds and promote it (all on a purely voluntary basis of course) your assistance would be most welcome.

Gravel Walk parking charges - 4/6/10

I agree that being charged £125 for parking in the Gravel Walk Private Car Park is indeed Daylight Robbery.
I would be happy to let the complainer park on my private drive all day for half that amount.

Faringdon Arts Festival - all Folked up . . . again!! - 4/6/10

Eargerly have I awaited the return of this year's Arts Festival. Particularly after last year, which many of us felt was somewhat of a washout (and not because of the weather) simply because of the choice of music which seemed to be catering for a select few!

The only element which many of us enjoyed was Mr Cartwright's choice of music played over the PA whilst the bands were changing!!! Now imagine my dismay when the new programme is published and due to the choice of music the "feel" of the festival is exactly the same as last year. Is it not up to the committee to embrace and cater for all us Donnians? . . . evidently not!

Apart from a few acts (of which I can count of a couple of fingers) I am saddened and dismayed at the somewhat elitist attitude!

yours "very disgruntled" Donnian.

PS Should you require some positive and crowd happy input for next year. I will be more than happy to oblige.
The Swan at Radcot - 2/6/10

Bank Holiday Monday we took a trip out to the Swan at Radcot, around 2pm to avoid the lunchtime rush. About 15 tables occupied outside (of around 30) and quite quiet inside. We had our toddler with us. We enquired at the bar whether food was still being served and were told "Yes" and handed a menu which had traditional pub grub, i.e.scampi, chips, burgers, sandwiches etc. So, we ordered our drinks and they were presented to us with the statement "Food will be at least 45 minutes". This gave us an issue in that, we had a toddler with us and those of you with one, will know you can't push your luck with mealtimes... When we asked if we could order him a sandwich or something similiar to be served a little quicker we were told out of the question and indeed, waiting time was more likely to be an hour. We pointed out it would have been beneficial to know this fact before the drinks were poured so we would have the option to go elsewhere. We got a shrug and a "well you have to pay for the drinks because we've poured them and the waiting time is what it is."

We left but felt sorry for the poor barmaid who was trying to offer her apologies and "see what she could do" before she was over-ridden by someone else.

This is the second time we've had incidences with customer service at The Swan. Such a shame for a beautiful location that we get the strong impression that the management believe we are fotunate enough to even set foot in the place and to offer any kind of quality of service is unreasonable.

Sadly, we won't be going there again...
However, the Red Lion in Faringdon, knocked out three belting meals of the same type as the Swan in under 15 minutes and in a beautiful beer garden ten minutes from home. Now that's a good service

Faringdon Arts Festival 2010- thankyou Dee - 2/6/10

Your comment about the Arts Festival programme is most appreciated.
Apologies to those who haven't received a copy yet. I'm doing my best to get them all delivered in Faringdon by the weekend.
For those outside Faringdon, your local shop or pub should have copies soon. Meanwhile, you can see what's on by clicking on the link at http://www.focusonfaringdon.co.uk/faringdon-arts-festival.

Re parking in Gravel Walk - 2/6/10

If memory serves me right, there is a sign IN the car park or on the building which states its ONLY for people that live there.
If people don't check then they only have themselves to blame. ts not a "nark", its there property and as such they are protecting those that live there.
