A whole generation of young people in Faringdon look back on
their teenage years as a time of joy; almost a magical time. This was
largely due to Russell Spinage, a local businessman, and his sister Peggy who
started and ran the local Youth Club.
It started in Westbrook
House,Gravel Walk, and then later in the Old Boys School on the Stanford Road(
then owned by Mr Tucker of Tucker's Nursery). The building consisted of a
large hall, where there was dancing and table tennis and a smaller billiard
room.
Starting with the 14-19s age group from 1949, by the early 1950s a
junior girls section had been formed. Activities included: Dancing-
maypole, country dancing, sword dancing, old time and rocknroll Drama- plays
and pantomimes Sport- football, tennis, badminton, table tennis,
cricket Competitions- talent, public speaking Fetes and fairs- floats and
dancing displays Skiffle group, Carol singing, socials Holidays and
weekends away
