the homeguard

5th Berkshire Homeguard battalion

The Homeguard observation post was established at the Folly tower.
Faringdon was a centre of resistance. Concrete road blocks and blockhouses were erected at strategic points and houses were earmarked for use as strongpoints, arrangements being made for loopholing and sandbagging at short notice
Exhaustive plans were laid for immobilisation, or destruction if need be, of all petrol pumps

The Folly gave 360 degree all round observation and would have been manned in shifts by two or three men throughout the invasion scare period in 1940 but would have been more relaxed as the invasion threat declined.

Further information on Faringdon's role when the United Kingdon was under threat of invasion in World War II can be found on hy worldwar2.htm
